Airbnb's were fun, but unfortunately- they might be done..At least they are for me.

First things first- I can not answer: Which is Better: Airbnb or Hotel? That is for you to decide. There are pros for both, just like there are cons. I can only talk about my experience and with that my preference.

Below is my comparison between the two.

AirBNB

Hotels

Offers the luxury of a home, however the owner also has access to the property, whenever they see fit.

More security, staff on all night, usually has cameras, and lock boxes. You are only provided a bed and bathroom.

To check into an Airbnb is sometimes tedious. While you may know the area, you do not know the address until a couple of days before your stay. Making it difficult to truly gauge distance, if you are planning to Uber around your destination once you arrive.

To check into a hotel, you just walk into the lobby any time of the day or night. If you are arriving late you can just call ahead to ensure your room is held.

Better for long-term stays, discounts often provided for longer stays. Great for groups, as everyone can stay in one place. You pay for the home, and not just the individual room

More expensive for long-term stays and discounts typically aren’t provided for staying longer. Unless you book at a property, made for extended stays. (those tend to include "Suite" in the name)

The photos do not always tell the truth. The photos for a room could look one way online but appear completely different in person. And unfortunately, if this happens to you, you may not be able to get a refund should you require a better option. Also getting in contact with Airbnb's corporate office can be daunting, as the homes on the site are not the property of Airbnb. The home owners are independent contractors.

Hotel rooms tend to have more updated photos on line. However, If you arrive and your hotel room is not up to par, you can request a room change at the front desk. Should that not be enough, you can contact the brands corporate HQ.

A more immersive experience in a local neighborhood

Can also provide tourist centered experience in a local neighborhood, through reccomendations from previous guests.

Short Term Rentals are subject to: Usually Cheaper

  • Nightly fee, set by hosts, cleaning fee charged by the host (although some hosts will just include this in the nightly fee)

  • Extra perks, like hot tubs, laundry facilities (When I was in Costa Rica, the hot tub was an additional fee everytime we wanted the water on)

  • Taxes

  • additional fees added by the host, including things like extra guest fee, security deposit, late check-in fee, etc. ***The price will fluctuate for a number of reasons including the time of year (peak season or off-season), and the popularity of the city.

hotels, your price will include:

  • The nightly fee

  • Daily housekeeping

  • Taxes

  • Amenities, including things like toiletries and breakfast (your reservation will say whether breakfast is included) ***The price will fluctuate for a number of reasons including the time of year (peak season or off-season), and the popularity of the city. In my experience Major northern have more hotels centrally located to the activities, which may allow for them to be cheaper due to supply and demand.

overseas- you have to pay for food and drink.

Overseas- Resorts include food, liquor and a room

While an Airbnb may be better for longer stays, apartment rentals are often short on amenities compared to a hotel unless you’re booking a 4/5 start property (sometimes 3 depending on the brand and location). This means that you are at times to provide the small travel necessities like- extra towels, body wash, toothpaste, etc. Whereas hotels (good hotels) offer the amenities (pool, breakfast, bar, restaurant, etc). While this contributes to short-term rentals, having lower overhead costs, this also means the value of your money does not include many perks. If you’re planning on staying at your accommodations for more than a week, then Airbnb is the way to go. Hotels sometimes have loyalty programs that give you discounts for multiple stays, but they rarely give deals for long-term stays. It can get pretty pricey to pay a nightly fee for an entire month, unless at an extended-stay hotel.

Overall, Airbnb's are usually more affordable and give you a better feel for the area you’re visiting. But you and your safety are at the mercy of the host. I have had positive experiences, but there are many horror stories. Of the exponential costs, they lack the safety, atmosphere, and amenities that standard hotels have in spades. Additionally, with all of Airbnb’s fees these days, hotels end up being almost in the same price range. If you are traveling with a group, Airbnb's may be the option.

If you’re going to try to figure out if a hotel rate compares to an Airbnb rate, you’re just going to have to do a bit of information research for both and figure out what makes you most content. All I ask is, if you book a hotel, please book directly through that property. When booking a third party, understand that any issues that arise involving your rate and payment, are to be handled through the party that booked the room. The front desk agents are limited, when the reservation is not directly through the corporate booking site.

I prefer hotels, as I enjoy convenience and the amenities and in my experience, they have been cheaper. But sometimes hotel deals are not worth the splurge, and AirBnB's are the way to go. Especially if you have a group that wants to be in one space.

Overall compare your options and all the information available to you, and figure out what gives you the most value for your pockets. Do not go broke trying to impress people who are at home. .
